MEDIA RELEASE:

Enter the virtual world of Thursday’s Fictions, a surreal dance fantasy film.

Thursday’s Fictions is the story of a woman who tries to cheat the cycle of reincarnation to get eternal life.  Cheating the confines of any single artform, this project about reincarnation, which has already transmigrated from the page to the stage to the screen, now brings the spiritual and the artist to Second Life.  In a unique tie-in on Sunday July 29, the most recent incarnations of Thursday’s Fictions will be broadcast on ABC TV and launched in Second Life.

Thursday’s Fictions has the raw intensity, epic dimensions and fantastical imagery of legend or myth.  It is a multi award-winning dreamlike film, adapted from the book, Thursday’s Fictions, by Dr Richard James Allen, which was short-listed for the Kenneth Slessor Prize for Poetry at the 2000 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards.

There are questions in the film Thursday’s Fictions which deal with themes of reincarnation and the nature of our universe. Now you can enter the immersive 3D world of Thursday’s Fictions in Second Life to explore the answers to these questions with other friends in Second Life.

The film Thursday’s Fictions screens on ABC TV on Sunday July 29 at 3pm.  Directly following the broadcast at 4pm you are invited on a spiritual quest by visiting Thursday’s Fictions in Second Life.

The creation of Thursday’s Fictions in Second Life is a collaboration by leading Australian dance filmmakers Dr Richard James Allen and Dr Karen Pearlman of The Physical TV Company and Australia’s foremost authority on Second Life, Gary Hayes. The initiative is supported by the Literature Board of the Australia Council through its The Story of the Future project, the Australian Film Television and Radio School through LAMP, the ABC through its Innovation and Arts Departments, and The Project Factory.

“People often say to me,” comments Dr Richard James Allen, Director, Co-Writer and Producer, “‘The world of Thursday’s Fictions is so beautiful and strange.  Where is it?  How can I go there?’  Until now I have had to answer, it doesn’t exist except in books and films and in the imagination.  But now I can say, you can visit it in Second Life.”  “When you visit an online 3D immersive environment,” notes Gary Hayes, Second Life Producer and Designer, “You really do enter the world.  You feel what it’s like to be one of the characters - and you can share that experience with your friends.”  “This is your opportunity,” as Dr Karen Pearlman, Co-Writer and Producer, puts it, “to be inside the story.”

Dr Richard James Allen, Dr Karen Pearlman, Gary Hayes and Story Consultant Jacqueline Turnure will be ‘in world’ in Second Life for a Q & A moderated by cross-media specialist Christy Dena at the ABC Amphitheatre on the ABC Island on Sunday July 29 at 4pm.  To attend the Q & A and enter the world of Thursday’s Fictions in Second Life follow these steps:  1) If you have not used Second Life before, go to http://secondlife.com/ and click on 'Join Now' - it takes 5 minutes.  (Note: Requires a fast computer with broadband).  2) Once you have downloaded the Second Life software, then log on.  3) After you have finished orientation click on ''Search', choose “Places” tab.  To go to the Q & A: type ‘ABC Island’.  Select: ‘ABC Amphitheatre’.  Select: ‘Teleport’.  After the Q & A, follow the signage to teleport to Thursday’s Fictions in Second Life.  Or:  To go directly to Thursday’s Fictions in Second Life: type and select ‘Thursdays Fictions’.  ‘Teleport’.   Alternatively, click on ‘Map’.  Search: ‘Esperance’.  ‘Teleport’.  Locate billboard, click on ‘Thursday’s Fictions in Second Life’.  From 4pm, July 29th, Thursday’s Fictions in Second Life will be located above Esperance, the AFTRS Island.   Please Note: For those without access to Second Life, the Q & A will also be streamed live on the web at 4pm on the Second Life Cable Network  (click here to view).

Thursday’s Fictions in Second Life is a unique and unprecedented cross artform collaboration.  Drawing also on Richard’s other books, in particular his recent acclaimed fiction, The Kamikaze Mind, it combines an historical sweep of media – from the more traditional artforms of poetry, dance and music - to the quintessentially 20th century medium of cinema to the evolving 21st century artform of the online digital immersive world.  Tune in to watch Thursday’s Fictions on ABC TV, a world filled with gorgeous imagery, beautiful dancing, sublime words and soaring music; then log on to enter the world of Thursday’s Fictions in Second Life.
